English development is recognised as being the essential basis for all learning. As part of the overall English curriculum and in common with all other schools nationally, the school uses the National Curriculum for English, to promote and teach good practice in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Spelling, punctuation and grammar is integrated in to all English lessons.

Reading is taught carefully and systematically to all children in order that they develop the skills they will need to read with fluency and understanding. This is approached through Destination Reader. We use Accelerated Reader’ and ‘The Write Stuff approach alongside ‘Opening Doors’ to engage our children in rich texts. We use the ‘Sounds Write’ scheme to encourage the development of phonic knowledge. Each classroom has a reading area which all children can access.
The school promotes a close liaison with parent/carers regarding children’s reading and encourages children to take books home. A clear and legible style of handwriting is taught throughout the school to develop style and fluency.
